The Story of a Farmer Who Didn't Know If His Crop Was a Blessing or a Curse

The Story of the Simple Farmer

The Story of the Farmer and Fate

A symbolic story of a humble farmer facing life’s twists between good and evil, revealing how one quiet wisdom can reshape how we see everything.

In a small, distant village, there lived a simple farmer who owned nothing but one horse to help him plow his fields and manage his crops.

One day, the horse ran away and disappeared into the mountains. The villagers gathered around the farmer and said sadly:

— Oh poor man! You have lost your only horse. How will you work your land now?

The farmer smiled calmly and replied:

— Who knows? It may be good, and it may be bad.

Days passed, and then the horse returned with a herd of wild horses. The villagers rejoiced and exclaimed:

— What great luck! Your horse has returned and brought many horses with it!

But the farmer replied with the same tranquility:

— Who knows? It may be good, and it may be bad.

In an attempt to tame one of those wild horses, the farmer's son fell and broke his leg. The neighbors came, concerned, and said:

— Oh, what a disaster! Your son is injured and can no longer help you.

The farmer calmly replied:

— Who knows? It may be good, and it may be bad.

Shortly after, soldiers from the king came to take the village's young men to war. However, they left the farmer's son behind because of his injury. The people said to him in astonishment:

— How lucky you are! Your son has escaped the war.

The farmer responded as usual:

— Who knows? It may be good, and it may be bad.

This story carries a deep meaning: what we see today as bad may hide good within it, and what we consider a loss may be a gateway to a new opportunity, and what seems like success may turn into a burden or greater responsibility.

In our daily lives, we hear about losing a job, failing a project, or facing business setbacks… In those moments, we feel it’s a disaster, but after years we discover it was the beginning of a better path. On the other hand, rapid success

As Allah Almighty said:

{And perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you} [Al-Baqarah: 216]

This is all good for the believer, as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Amazing is the affair of the believer! All of his affairs are good, and this is not for anyone except the believer; if he is afflicted with happiness, he thanks (Allah), and that is good for him, and if he is afflicted with hardship, he is patient, and that is good for him.”
